License Renewal for North Dakota Nursing Home Administrators

To maintain an active license as a Nursing Home Administrator in North Dakota, all licensees must submit a completed renewal application and pay the annual renewal fee by December 31 of the current year.

Annual Renewal Requirements

  • Renewal Fee: $250 (non-refundable)

  • Deadline: December 31

  • Continuing Education: Minimum of 20 hours of approved continuing education

  • Submission: Complete and sign the fillable PDF renewal form and mail it with the fee to the Board of Examiners office.

Note: The renewal form is a fillable PDF. Complete it electronically, then print and mail it with your payment.


Late Renewal Policy

If you do not renew your license by December 31, you may still renew by:

  • Paying a late fee of $25 per month (beginning January 1)

  • Submitting the completed renewal form and fee

  • Meeting all standard renewal requirements

If a license is not renewed within six months of expiration, the license is considered dropped. The individual must reapply and meet the requirements for initial licensure or if licensed in another state, can come through endorsement.


Inactive Licensure Option

You may choose to place your license on inactive status for up to three years.

  • Submission: Complete and sign the fillable PDF renewal form and mail it with the fee to the Board of Examiners office.

  • Fee: $250 (non-refundable)

  • CEUs: Not required while inactive

  • Practice: You may not practice as a nursing home administrator while inactive

  • Reactivation: Requires submission of 20 hours of approved continuing education

Inactive status still requires submission of the renewal form and fee annually.


Continuing Education Requirements

To ensure competence in the field, all active licensees must complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually from approved providers.

Accepted Sponsors Include:

  • North Dakota Long Term Care Association

  • North Dakota Hospital Association

  • American College of Healthcare Administrators / ND Roughrider Chapter

  • Great Plains Quality Innovation Network

  • NAB/NCERS-approved programs

  • Courses approved by other state licensing boards (with verification)

  • Accredited college courses in management, finance, human resources, or gerontology:

    • 1 quarter credit = 9 clock hours

    • 1 semester credit = 12 clock hours


Facility Compliance Reminder

All skilled nursing facilities must be under the management of a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. Facilities without a licensed administrator are in violation of state law and will be reported to the ND State Health Department.
